NEWS

Those of you that were at the first Reunion will know about our Honourary Member and Normandy Veteran from the 12th (Yorkshire) Bn, Bert Marsh, some may have read his story on the Hero's page. I am pleased to tell you of a further developement to that story.

In the report I placed a photograph of 12th Bn Mortar Pl taken in 1945 on Luneburg Heath and in front of a Dakota.(see below) Well recently a Dave Martin joined the site forum and contacted me to let me know that he had been talking to his father about his exploits in the war and his service with the 12th Bn. and on finding the 1 para site and the photo, his father told him that he is in fact on the same photograph. Both had served together in the mortars.

Needless to say I got back to David and we have now passed on details to Bert to get in touch with his old Mortar mucker. I can tell you that Bert has just rung me to tell me that he has now made that first contact with his old mate Veteran George Leslie Martin after 62 years.

It is my sincere hope that the two old stalwarts can get together at our next Reunion. In any case, good luck to both veterans and long may you lead the way. (photo's below indicates our hero's).

This picture was taken from a book of the 12th (Yorkshire Bn) Parachute Regiment.

From Dave Singletary 2 Para Reunion Club

At the end of November we were going to have a Ladies/Christmas Party as a thank you for putting up with us but given the present climate a more pressing need has arisen. The VO's (Visiting Officers) are faced with a thankless task and as always do not in my opinion receive the complete support the family's deserve. There is and probably always will be a cash shortfall. We as a group have supported them and always will but it is useless to ring our hands and blame the government (it is their fault) and let us do what we have always done and be pro-active and raise funds for our fallen brothers.

To this end November has become a fund raiser for a Wounded Soldier Fund to help the VO's to fund any short falls. It is open to all Brigade members and the details are on the booking form below.

I wish to attend the Wounded Soldier fund raising weekend at the Metropole Hotel, Blackpool between Friday 21 st to Sunday 23 rd November 2008 .

I am sure most of you will know that the Battle Group Led by 3 Para is now deployed in Theatre and getting on with their tasks. It goes without saying that their task is harduous and extremely dangerous and every day there brings it own risks. We all know that they are the best and will give their all but the task never the less is one for which many in this country show little support. The young men of today will aquit themselves no worse than you or I and some will show much geater courage, against an already formidable enemy. We wish them well and hope they all 'Stay Low and Keep Safe'.

I would ask also that we spare a thought for those left behind to carry on and try not to think about the lads and the danger they may be in at any given time. I am thinking of the wifes of the soldiers and their young Children who must miss them greatly. Think too of the Girlfriends and partners etc who also have a heavy burden to carry. And think also of the parents who saw young Joe such a short time ago get through the hazards of Depot and change from a boy to a man and whom they are justly proud. Last but not least, think of those who think there is no one back home who thinks of them and worries they should come to harm. They are not alone and not unloved. We of all people think of them constantly and wait for the day they all return safe and well,

God Bless Them All

Recently recieved this info from Roy Mobsby who represents the

Pathfinder Parachute group UK.

http://www.pathfindergroupuk.com/

We are a large group of former Paratroopers many from foreign Airborne units who specialise in jumping round military parachutes for fun.

We have jumped at Arnhem and Normandy as part of the opening events. Jumping from a DC3 in WW2 uniform and using green military round parachutes on static line the way we were taught out our respective jump schools. WO1 Dennis Melia recently joined us and described us as the best kept Airborne secret in existence.

We have been reliable informed that next years Arnhem and Normandy drops will be the last officially sanctioned events of there kind. We however disagree with that and have persuaded the Arnhem committee to allow us to continue jumping there at our own expense for the next five years which I am glad to say they have agreed too.

We have arranged a "Drop and Poppy Appeal" which we hope will raise a considerable amount of cash for the Royal British Legions Poppy Appeal and the Airborne Assault Duxford museum appeal which is of course very dear to our hearts . Instead of buying a Poppy you will be able to sponsor one to be dropped onto either the Normandy or Arnhem DZ. This will also be available on line for our ex pats overseas.

The next project is to give as many former Airborne soldiers and Military parachutist the chance to jump the DC3 before it becomes too expensive to operate.

We are trying to raise enough money to have two jump aircraft at Arnhem this year and if we are able to get sponsors we may be able to continue this display for a few more years. We live in hope. Please pass this information to your members and feel free to visit our web site. Im available to answer questions on 02380-899369. Thank you for your time. Roy Mobsby (Former 5 Abn Bde) Roy Mobsby
